Tesla use lithium-ion battery. A standard lithium-ion battery has a composition of materials like lithium, nickel, cobalt and aluminium oxide. But on the other hand Tesla use some other combination for its battery manufacture. Tesla vehicles have NCA chemistry. NCA stands for Nickel Cobalt Aluminium. Using this combination Tesla saves money and this increases efficiency.
Panasonic is the manufacturer of Tesla’s Li-ion batteries.Panasonic specially makes 21-70 Li-ion batteries for Tesla, because the batteries are of the right size. The name of the battery is actually the size of the battery used by the company.
This battery helps Tesla to decrease its cost and increase miles. These batteries are 46% larger in volume than the older 18650.
In august of 2017 Tesla announced that they would construct their Gigafactory in Nevada, where thy would manufacture, most of it’s batteries.
These 21-70 Li-ion batteries are being used only in Tesla Model 3. Before these batteries Tesla used 18650 batteries in their Model S and Model X. Tesla has also used Samsung SDI cells but not in cars but for stationary storage i.e. Tesla Power Packs.
The conclusion is that the use of 21-70 Li-ion battery is only because the materials used in the manufacture do not include a high amount of Lithium which helps, in decreasing the cost and increasing efficiency.
Since fossil fuels are going to finish, for now Electrical vehicles are our only option for modes of transport
