Do you remember those days when you have to unlock your smartphone by those security digit numbers and if you forget any of those numbers then it’s a total mess. To over come this problem smartphone companies introduced fingerprint sensor on their smartphones, it’s fast and secure as compared to the security code. In last few years we have seen improvement in this technology, on it’s initial days this technology was implemented on the backside of the smartphones where you can just tap your finger and it’ll read your unique fingerprint and simply unlocks your smartphone.
Later on this technology was introduced on smartphone’s screen it was kind of cool but there were some issues with it and now, we have Ultrasonic Fingerprint Sensors in our smartphones which is more improved as compared to the other two.Ultrasonic Fingerprint Sensor
Ultrasonic Fingerprint Sensor
Samsung is the first smartphone company which introduced Ultrasonic Fingerprint Sensor into the screen. Now lets begin with how this technology works, when you tap your finger on screen it sends the tone burst which is converted into pressure waves it is basically similar to how SONAR works, essentially what it does is it uses the acoustics and the sound to scan the pores of your finger which results in a very accurate three-dimensional scan of your finger.
How it’s different from the other Fingerprint Scanners
To actually capture the three dimensional image of a fingerprint, the hardware consists of both a transmitter and a receiver, an Ultrasonic Pulse is transmitted against the finger that is placed over the the scanner.
Now some of this pulse is absorbed and some of it is bounced back to the sensor depending upon the ridges, pores and other details that are unique to each Fingerprint, for bounced back signals there isn’t a microphone listening for signals instead there is a sensor that can detect the mechanical stress that is used to calculate the intensity of returning Ultrasonic pulses at different point of the scanner resulting in a highly detailed 3D image of your fingerprint. 3D image of your finger makes it even more secure as compared to other fingerprint scanners.
In Capacitive scanners instead of creating an image of a fingerprint, it actually use arrays tiny capacitor circuits to collect data about the fingerprint, capacitor store electrical charge so connecting them to conductive plates on the surface of the scanner allows them to be used to track the details of a fingerprint
In case of Optical scanners, this technique relies on capturing an optical image, a photograph, which uses algorithms to detect the unique patterns on the surface such as ridges. This sensor have high resolution which results in fine details about your finger increasing the level of security but as this scanner can capture only 2D images of your fingerprints it isn’t too hard to fool.
As Ultrasonic Scanner capture 3D images of your fingerprint so it’s much secure than other fingerprint scanners there is no doubt in that.
