On July 20, 1969, manned lunar mission took its first step. Commander Neil Armstrong and lunar module pilot Buzz Aldrin, both American, landed the Apollo Lunar Module Eagle on the Moon. Apollo 11 was the spaceflight that landed the first two people on the Moon. This is one of the greatest achievement in the history of space exploration, but since 1969 we haven’t went back to the moon. its almost 50 years since then.
On May 9, 2019, Amazon’s CEO Jeff Bezos announced that Blue Origin is going to the Moon. He unveiled a new moon lander called Blue Moon, which will take humans to the Moon by 2024.
Jeff Bezos during the event said
Its time to go back to the moon, this time to stay
During the event Jeff Bezos gives an overview of the Blue Moon. Blue Moon is a flexible lander built for delivering a wide variety of small, medium and large payloads to the lunar surface. It is capable of providing precise and soft landings which can help us in a sustained human presence on the Moon.
Cool thing about the Blue Moon is that it can deliver payloads to the lunar surface during its journey to the Moon. Blue Moon lander is built to run on the liquid hydrogen fuel. This lander is designed to launch on Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket.
Blue Moon will also use a new rocket engine called BE-7, it is an additively manufactured, high-performance, dual-expander cycle engine, which can generate upto 40 kN (10,000 lbf) thrust. This engine will be test fired this summer for the first time.
BE-7 is capable of making high specific impulse also deep throttling and restart capabilities of the BE-7 make the engine ideal for large lunar payload transport.
At the end of the event Jeff Bezos said
Big things start small
And this lunar mission we can say is one of the small step for making big things happen.
