Walmart plans to launch free video streaming service to take on Amazon Prime

Flipkart video streaming service will be free for Plus Members

Walmart Inc.’s Flipkart plans to launch a new video streaming service in India as part of its battle with Amazon, according to a report from Bloomberg.

Flipkart Plus loyalty program members will have free access to this video streaming service. Flipkart was acquired by Walmart in May 2018 and according to the reports it was the world’s largest e-commerce acquisition at that time for the price price of $16 billion.

According to the reports this video streaming service will roll out most probably by September ahead of the peak Diwali shopping season. For now this service is in beta mode. This video streaming service will be launched in Indian market only. Flipkart has no plans for its video streaming service to be launched outside of the Indian market for now. Flipkart doesn’t plan to initially produce any of its own shows. Instead, it will rely on licensing content from the likes of Disney and Balaji Telefilm.

Unlike Amazon’s Prime Video streaming service which coast Rs.999 a year in India, Flipkart’s video streaming service will operate very differently. You can have access to this video streaming service just by becoming a Flipkart Plus Member and for that all you have to do is just shop and earn with Flipkart.

For every Rs.100 spent on Flipkart order you earn 2 super coins and you can earn maximum of 50 super coins per order, coins will be credited to your account after the completion of the return period of all the items in the order. If you earn 300 super coins, you are eligible to join the Flipkart Plus membership, also no coins will be taken for Plus Membership.

The Walmart subsidiary will face stiff competition from India’s video streaming market. Along with international players like Amazon Prime Video and Netflix, India also has its own collection of services like JioCinema, Hooq and Voot.
