The light takes about 8.57 minutes to reach earth. Earth receives about 174 petawatts (PW) of incoming solar radiation everyday from sun. Out of which 30% is reflected back and rest is absorbed by the ocean, rivers sand etc.
We generate about 25,082 TWh (this data is gross production). In figures this looks like a very big figure but reality is that generating this much amount of power there are some places in the world who don’t have access to light.
So if we could somehow manage to harness the energy of sun the we could supply electricity to every part of the globe.
But the question is how?
A physicist of early 90’s proclaimed that how can we harness the energy of sun. The name of the Physicist is “Freeman Dyson”. Dyson was born on 15 December 1923 at Crowthorne, United Kingdom. He said that we could make a sphere that wound cover the entire sun and could harness the full energy of the sun. This idea later on was given a name as “Dyson Sphere”.
If we think of the idea proposed is not practical because the size of sun is very large and there is a lack of material which can be used for making the sphere. Somehow if we are able to create the sphere then also it is not sure that, if it would with-stand the power sun or not.
Some Astro Engg believe that instead of making Dyson Sphere we can make Dyson Swar. According to this idea we would make small small advanced solar pannels that would cover the sun and would absorb the energy and transfer it wirelessly to the earth.
Still building a Dyson Swar would require Mercury(Hg) in a amount that will completely destroy the planet. Still if we managed to do so the humanity would be able to reach greater heights and space exploration would be made easy. And we would be able to colonise other planets.
It is characteristic of all deep human problems that they are not to be approached without some humor and some bewilderment.
