Steam Deck Will Be As Impressive As The Iphone, Gabe Newell
The Steam Deck handheld console was officially unveiled yesterday. And with the launch of this portable gaming PC to some buyers, Volvo CEO Gabe Newell. He says the device will have a similar effect on the PC gaming industry as the Apple iPhone on the mobile phone industry. Put “Demand has been ‘much higher than we expected,'” he said.
In an interview with IGN about the launch of the Steam Deck, Newell was asked how long the handheld console had been under construction. And whether the concept existed before the release of the Nintendo Switch. He replied that the idea of playing PC games outside the home was something the gaming industry had been looking for for decades, long before Nintendo introduced its hybrid gaming system.
I think every gamer has been looking for such a thing for a long time, am I not right? I mean, every time you start a PC game, about a month later, you ask yourself, “Where’s my mobile version?” Am I not right? That is, the projects that tried to do so go back to the 1990s. So what’s really different this time around is that we’ve finally gotten to the point where [performance] per watt actually allows you to do that.
Newell went on to say that the PC industry wanted the idea, but the technology never materialized. He even gave an example of what the mobile phone industry experienced about 15 years ago when Apple introduced the first generation iPhone.
There are software challenges that you have to solve, but one of them is “before and after”. Am I not right? For example, we have an era before the iPhone and an era after it. Until then, you used the Blackberry for very specific applications. But in terms of a public mobile computing device, the iPhone was an industry milestone. Now, we have reached the point where you have a mobile gaming machine that can do almost anything. And from now on it will only get better and better for PC gamers.

Newell believes that Steam Deck will influence the PC gaming environment. And that the ideas and concepts that this handheld console introduces are generally applied in the industry or will be influenced by other companies in the market.
Obviously we ship our hardware, but I think some of the key issues that we are currently trying to address will generally apply to many PC manufacturers in the PC space. So I think there will be a permanent generalization to the PC market of these solutions.
